Lol, you see, MY therory is that Snape and Lily were secretly in a relationship because of the whole slytherin/gryffindor feud but then Snape joined the DE's, it scared Lily and she left him and was comforted by James. -insert werid creepy music here-

... but then again I'm probably nuts and letting my fanfic obsessed mind get the better of me. XD

I am a huge supporter of the theory that Snape was secretly in love with Lily, which would certainly add great significance to the fact that he always hated James so much- not only was he jealous of James for also having eyes for Lily all those years, esp when they actually began going out in their 7th year, but when it was announced that they were engaged (I believe they got engaged while still at Hogwarts, probably close to the end of their year; and since both James and Lily were very popular- and you know how fast news travels in that place- it was HUGE news that everybody was excitedly talking about.) I think that was the straw that broke the camel's back for Snape, what REALLY drove his hatred for James over the edge- he was always used to James being the best at everything, always having everything, always showing Snape up, but this jealously was deeper; it was PERSONAL. He had stolen the ultimate prize from him, and all that made his life at Hogwarts bearable- because Snape was a very unpopular guy, and he loved Lily for her kindness, compassion, and understanding, and her ability to see the best in everybody even when they couldn't see it. She was always there for him, the underdog when, he needed her. (And that's what makes the chapter, 'Snape's Worst Memory' so important; when Snape insulted Lily in front of his Gryffindor foes, due to his Slytheren pride and his stubborn views on hiding one's true feelings, he knew that he had blown any chance he might have had with her, she had lost all respect for him, and he never forgave himself for that OR James.

And when he ultimately lost her (though they were never actually a couple, despite his hopes) to James, I think that ultimately inspired him to throw his life to the Dark Side, having so much anger and hate and bitterness inside (and don't forget, it has been strongly hinted that he had a very harsh home-life, as well)... which, as we all know, eventually was what essentially killed the love of his life, on his information to his Master, which he NEVER forgave himself for either... and he probably blamed James for that too, because he felt that James was what ultimately drove him to the Dark Side. And his remorse was what caused him to turn back to the good side and join in the fight against the Dark Side.

And beneath it all, he hates Harry because Harry is a living reminder of what he lost, as well as the fact that he seems to represent JAMES in almost every sense.

Ditto to all that, lol, forgive the lack of original contribution but you seem to have covered all based in your response (I might add it would also be reason for why he lashed out at Lily fifth year calling her the "M" slur word)...hm, and I wonder if his regret about not being able to protect previous loved ones is what makes him so determined to protect certain young individuals in the present (lol no names, some people may not have read HBP), one of those young individuals because he really cares for the boy as his protege, and the othr of them because it's like finally giving something back to Lily, even though he hates the boy, lol...wonder if that helped him go through with the horribly difficult thing Dumbledore asked of him....anyway.

To the artist, lol, thank you VERY MUCH for a haunting piece that poignantly evokes loneliness, remorse, and nostalgia in this character and for people in general. Fave for sure!
